Dre Spisto( b. Venezuela, 1989) is an artist whose work moves across live performance, experimental film, and installation. Rooted in sensory knowledge and subversive tenderness, their practice explores the entangled terrains of queerness, displacement, and desire often through surreal, non-linear compositions that invite audiences into states of not-knowing and participation often through mischief seeking and great hope.

Working across theatres, galleries, and club spaces, Dre draws on the energies of each to shape forms of encounter that are affective, participatory, and resistant to traditional spectatorship often blending and pulling from each other. Their performances often blur the edges of the absurd and the intimate, using humour not as distracting and disarming technology for closeness, a way to hold contradiction, rupture tightness, and pull the viewer close (instead of) understanding.

Time (crip time, autistic time, dream time) are both subjects and methods in their work. Rather than adhering to narrative structure or resolution, Dre privileges process, texture, and attunement. Slowness, fragmentation, and softness are not aesthetic gestures but refusals that challenge capitalist rhythms of coherence, clarity, and productivity. Softness/woundedness as an anarchic entry point to resistance.

Recent works include 50 Ways to Kill a Slug, a surreal, sensory live art performance exploring slowness, uselessness, and anticapitalist kinship through the figure of the garden slug. Funded by Arts Council England and Shape Arts, the show is currently programmed at Battersea Arts Centre, Soho Theatre, and The Wardrobe Theatre. Other credits include El Dizzy Beast (Filipa Bragança Award nominee), Butch Princesa (nominated for Best Cabaret, Best Performance Artist, and Best Theatre Show), Miss Venezuela, and the Tylor and Vincent series.

Dre appears as the shapeshifter in The Stimming Pool, an experimental film co-created by the Neurocultures Collective and artist-filmmaker Steven Eastwood. Currently screening in UK cinemas, the film offers a poetic encounter with environments hostile and soothing to autistic experience, through the lens of an ‘autistic camera’.

Their work has been presented at Jupiter Artland, Soho Theatre, CASA Festival, The British Museum, Arcola Theatre, Brixton House, CPT, Shoreditch Town Hall, Quench Gallery, Shape Arts, Ugly Duck, and ICA. They also collaborated with Sweatmother on Dyke Just Do It (ICA), and led workshops at Turner Contemporary for OSE’s public programme.

As a curator and producer, Dre has worked with disability arts organisation Unlimited and as Creative Programmes Producer at People United, producing projects such as We Keep Each Other Fed, Queer Zines of Care, and Soft Fascination. They also run Snug Club, a queer experimental film night in Margate supporting emerging filmmakers, in partnership with Margate Pride. Dre currently teaches on the MA in Theatre for Community and Education at Mountview Academy of Performing Arts and runs Anarchic Charisma, a neuroqueer clown lab based in Margate.
